The USA Men’s Eagles have announced their lineup for the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final against Fiji. The team features seven changes to the starting XV, including the test debut of former Wales Sevens and former Bristol Bears player Toby Fricker at fullback.
Fricker, who qualifies for the Eagles through his New Orleans-born mother, recently joined MLR’s New England Free Jacks. The 29-year-old brings valuable experience from his time with the Dragons and Bristol, where he made 32 appearances and scored nine domestic tries, with three in Europe. In 2023, Fricker signed for the Ospreys in the URC but only featured once before moving stateside to the MLR.
Head coach Scott Lawrence has implemented sweeping changes, with seven personnel switches and one positional adjustment from their previous match. Veteran wing Nate Augspurger, coming off a two-try performance against Japan, will captain the side in his 46th test appearance. This marks Augspurger’s sixth time leading the Eagles, showcasing his leadership in a crucial match.
The backline sees further reshuffling, with Chris Mattina stepping in at fly-half for Luke Carty while Tavite Lopeti shifts to inside centre to accommodate Dominic Besag’s return at outside centre. Conner Mooneyham completes the back three alongside Augspurger and debutant Fricker.
In the forwards, Sean McNulty and Paul Mullen are promoted to the starting XV, joining Jack Iscaro in the front row. Jason Damm partners with Vili Helu in the second row, while the back row features Thomas Tu’avao at number 8, flanked by Paddy Ryan and Cory Daniel.
The bench holds another exciting prospect, with U20s standout Rand Santos poised to make his test debut if called upon. Santos, who impressed during the USA’s run to the World Rugby U20 Trophy final earlier this year, provides fly-half cover and represents the future of American rugby.
Notably absent from the matchday 23 are two of the USA’s top performers in the tournament so far: fly-half Luke Carty and number 8 Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz. Additionally, Greg Peterson, the only Eagle in the squad with experience against Fiji from their last meeting in 2014, moves to the bench.
Coach Lawrence emphasized the team’s focus on consistency and performance, highlighting three key pillars for the campaign: discipline, physicality, and bravery with the ball. He also noted the importance of the bench, stating, “We went from 18% productivity to 41% productivity from our bench between the Canada and Japan match, so we’ll look to improve that again.”
As the Eagles prepare for this crucial semi-final, Captain Augspurger stressed the importance of decision-making at the breakdown, an area where they struggled against Japan. “Making good decisions around the breakdown is going to be a huge part of the game for us,” he said.
The match is set for Saturday, September 14th at 6:05 AM ET in Tokyo, marking the teams’ first encounter in nearly a decade.
