The Blues and Chiefs have named their teams for the highly anticipated Super Rugby Pacific final, with both sides receiving significant boosts ahead of the clash at Eden Park on Saturday night.
Blues
In a stunning turn of events, Blues captain Patrick Tuipulotu has made a remarkable recovery from a knee injury suffered in the quarter-final against the Fijian Drua. Initially expected to be sidelined for up to seven weeks, Tuipulotu has been cleared to play after testing his knee in training this week.
Blues head coach Vern Cotter expressed his delight at having the talismanic lock available for selection. “Patty’s a Blues man through and through and came to us this week pretty keen to play in a Grand Final,” Cotter said. “He’s pulled up well and has the all-clear from our medical team – he’s a welcome addition to our pack, our talisman lock and leader.”
Tuipulotu’s return sees Josh Beehre drop to the bench, while midfielder Bryce Heem has also been named in the reserves after recovering from injury. The rest of the Blues starting XV remains unchanged from the semi-final win over the Brumbies.
BLUES (1-15): Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Ricky Riccitelli, Marcel Renata, Patrick Tuipulotu (c), Sam Darry, Akira Ioane, Dalton Papali’i, Hoskins Sotutu, Finlay Christie, Harry Plummer, Caleb Clarke, AJ Lam, Rieko Ioane, Mark Tele’a, Stephen Perofeta
RESERVES: Kurt Eklund, Joshua Fusitu’a, Angus Ta’avao, Josh Beehre, Adrian Choat, Taufa Funaki, Bryce Heem, Cole Forbes
Chiefs
Meanwhile, the Chiefs have been forced into changes due to injuries sustained in their physical semi-final victory over the Hurricanes. All Blacks hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho has been ruled out with a leg injury, with Tyrone Thompson promoted to start in his place.
In a boost for the Chiefs, reserve hooker Bradley Slater has been cleared to play after leaving the field with a knock last weekend. Slater’s availability is crucial, given the Chiefs’ hooking depth has been tested.
The Chiefs have also welcomed back fullback Shaun Stevenson, who missed the semi-final with a hamstring complaint. His return sees Etene Nanai-Seturo shift to the left wing, with Daniel Rona moving to the bench. Lock Manaaki Selby-Rickit comes onto the bench in place of the injured Naitoa Ah Kuoi.
Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan acknowledged the challenge of losing key players but backed his squad’s depth to step up. “It’s unfortunate to have lost some key players through injury, but no team has been immune to this, and you won’t see us worrying about something we can’t control,” McMillan said. “We are genuinely excited for the players who now get their opportunity.”
CHIEFS (1-15): Aidan Ross, Tyrone Thompson, George Dyer, Jimmy Tupou, Tupou Vaa’i, Samipeni Finau, Luke Jacobson (c), Wallace Sititi, Cortez Ratima, Damian McKenzie, Etene Nanai Seturo, Rameka Poihipi, Anton Lienert-Brown, Emoni Narawa, Shaun Stevenson
RESERVES: Bradley Slater, Jared Proffit, Reuben O’Neill, Manaaki Selby-Rickit, Simon Parker, Xavier Roe, Quinn Tupaea, Daniel Rona
The Blues will be hoping Tuipulotu’s return can inspire them to a first title since 2003, while the Chiefs are aiming to go one better than last year’s final defeat and claim their first championship since 2013.
