Ardie Savea has been named All Blacks captain as head coach Dave Rennie unveiled his first squad for the 2026 Nations Championship, selecting 34 players including four uncapped newcomers for July Tests against France, Italy and Ireland on home soil.
Announced at Feilding Yellows Rugby Club alongside fellow selectors Sir Graham Henry and senior assistant coach Neil Barnes, the squad is headlined by the inclusion of record-breaking Hurricanes wingers Fehi Fineanganofo and Josh Moorby, who each scored 17 tries this Super Rugby Pacific season to set a new individual competition record for a single campaign.
Key team news:
- Ardie Savea named All Blacks captain for 2026, replacing the injured Scott Barrett
- Four uncapped players selected: Fehi Fineanganofo, Josh Moorby, Xavier Numia and Anton Segner
- Fineanganofo and Moorby both broke the Super Rugby try-scoring record with 17 tries each this season
- Anton Lienert-Brown returns from a Japanese sabbatical; Rieko Ioane and Du’Plessis Kirifi among notable omissions
- Hurricanes and Chiefs dominate the 34-man squad with 11 players apiece
Savea, who captained Kobe Steelers to the Japanese League One title under Rennie this year, was the overwhelming favourite to lead the side in the absence of Scott Barrett, who remains sidelined with a serious back injury. The 32-year-old loose forward, who has 106 caps to his name, said the appointment was a profound honour.
“To serve this team, its people and its fans is one of the greatest honours in sport,” said Savea. “I believe this role is about empowering everyone in the group to be the best that they can be — from the leadership, to the players and wider staff.
Fineanganofo’s selection is perhaps the most noteworthy inclusion. The 23-year-old former All Blacks Sevens player signed a two-year contract with English Premiership club Newcastle in January, due to begin in December. Players in such circumstances rarely win All Blacks selection, but Rennie has made an exception on the back of a breakthrough Super Rugby season with the Hurricanes. It remains unclear whether New Zealand Rugby has helped facilitate a release from that deal to ensure the winger’s long-term availability.
Moorby, who matched Fineanganofo’s 17-try haul — both men scoring in the Super Rugby Pacific final against the Chiefs — is the other uncapped outside back in the squad. Hurricanes loosehead prop Xavier Numia completes the trio of uncapped players from the title-winning side, while Blues loose forward Anton Segner is set to become the first German-born All Black.
Segner’s inclusion came at the expense of Hurricanes openside Du’Plessis Kirifi, a surprise omission following an immense Super Rugby campaign. Kirifi misses out on a contentious six-man loose forward mix that also includes Chiefs trio Simon Parker, Luke Jacobson and Wallace Sititi alongside Savea and Peter Lakai.
Elsewhere, experienced midfielder Anton Lienert-Brown has been recalled after skipping the 2026 Super Rugby season to take up a sabbatical in Japan with Kobe Steelers. The 31-year-old, who has 88 caps, joins Jordie Barrett, Quinn Tupaea and Billy Proctor as the midfield options.
Rieko Ioane, who scored a try as he helped Leinster win the United Rugby Championship title at the weekend, has not been included. Crusaders halfback Noah Hotham, tipped by some pundits to deputise for Hurricanes ace Cam Roigard, also misses out. Rennie has instead opted for Cortez Ratima and Kyle Preston, Hotham’s Crusaders teammate who did not start a single game this season but impressed in 11 appearances off the bench.
Rennie said the squad reflected the style of rugby he and his coaching team want the All Blacks to play.
“We are rapt with this squad — players with the ability to bar up to the demands of test footy but also play with optimism and brutality. We look forward to connecting on Wednesday in preparation for three big tests against France, Italy and Ireland,” Rennie said.
“Special congratulations must go to our four uncapped players. These men have each had an outstanding Super Rugby season and fully deserve their place in the squad. It will be a massively proud time for their families, friends and teammates.”
Several players have been named despite carrying injury concerns. Crusaders fullback Will Jordan is included despite suffering a second calf injury on 22 May, while Chiefs flanker Sititi has been managing a concussion. Chiefs lock Tupou Vaa’i suffered a head knock in his side’s 60-5 Super Rugby final hammering at the hands of the Hurricanes and is a major doubt for the opening Test against France. Uncapped Crusaders lock Jamie Hannah will join the squad as injury cover until Vaa’i clears concussion protocols.
Four players were ruled out of selection entirely through injury: Scott Barrett (back), Tamaiti Williams (spinal infection), Leicester Fainga’anuku (leg fracture) and Fabian Holland (shoulder).
The Hurricanes and Chiefs each contribute 11 players to the squad, reflecting the dominance of those two franchises during the Super Rugby Pacific season. The Crusaders and Blues have five representatives apiece, though the Crusaders would have more if Barrett, Williams and Fainga’anuku were fit. Highlanders loosehead prop Ethan de Groot is the sole representative of his franchise.
Rising Hurricanes fly-half Ruben Love has been named alongside veterans Beauden Barrett, 35, and Damian McKenzie, 31, as the first five-eighth options. All eyes will turn to who gets the nod against France, particularly after McKenzie’s difficult Super Rugby final.
The squad assembles in Auckland on Wednesday before travelling to Christchurch ahead of the opening Test.
