Damian McKenzie will celebrate his 150th Super Rugby match when the Chiefs host the Crusaders in Friday night’s blockbuster semi-final at FMG Stadium Waikato, though head coach Jono Gibbes has been forced into changes after losing Wallace Sititi and Kyle Brown to concussions.
Key team news:
- Damian McKenzie becomes the third player to reach 150 Super Rugby matches for the Chiefs
- Wallace Sititi ruled out with a concussion sustained against the Reds; Samipeni Finau starts at blindside flanker with Simon Parker shifting to number eight
- Kyle Brown also out with a concussion; Lalakai Foketi starts at centre alongside Quinn Tupaea
- Liam Coombes-Fabling returns on the right wing after a late withdrawal last weekend
- Leroy Carter named on the bench again after failing a fitness test last week (hamstring)
- Kaylum Boshier and Xavier Roe are new faces on the bench
McKenzie, who last week became the third-highest point-scorer in Super Rugby history, said reaching the milestone in a semi-final against the Crusaders in Hamilton would be hard to top. “We have been working really hard throughout the year to put ourselves into playoff contention and to play my 150th against the Crusaders in the semifinal is special,” McKenzie said.
“We are extremely excited for this match and ready to rip in. We know what to expect and we know what we need to do to win.”
The loss of All Blacks number eight Sititi is the most significant blow, after his sickening head knock against the Reds last Saturday. Finau’s promotion to blindside flanker sees Parker shift across to number eight, with Boshier providing loose forward cover from the bench. Captain Luke Jacobson continues at openside flanker.
Brown’s concussion has opened a spot in midfield for Foketi, who partners vice-captain Tupaea in the centres. In the back three, Coombes-Fabling returns on the right wing having been preferred to Daniel Sinkinson, with Kyren Taumoefolau on the left wing and Isaac Hutchinson at fullback. Taumoefolau has been in scintillating form, directly involved in six tries across the last four matches with four scores and two assists.
All Blacks winger Leroy Carter has again been named on the bench as he continues his comeback from a tight hamstring. Carter was originally named in the matchday 23 last week before being withdrawn after failing a fitness test.
McKenzie said the key to play-off rugby was execution in the small moments. “In playoff rugby there are small margins and small moments you have to nail,” he said. “We know if we stay with what is true to us, it will put us in a good position. Being at home is great, we love playing in front of our fans and we are excited.”
All Blacks lock Tupou Vaa’i said composure would be crucial against the defending champions. “There’ll be a lot of emotions going in and out of our heads, but I think the longer we can stay composed and poised, we can come out with the win,” Vaa’i said. “There’s a cliche that defence wins games, and it’s going to come down to our defence.”
The Chiefs have won their last three semi-finals in Super Rugby Pacific but have lost their last five finals matches against the Crusaders, including last year’s Grand Final in Christchurch. They have won nine of their last 10 matches and a victory on Friday would see them contest their fifth final in six years as they chase a first title since 2013.
Josh Lord, the 12-test All Blacks lock who has remarkably missed all four of the Chiefs’ finals in the last five seasons through injury, has enjoyed his best run of games this campaign with 13 appearances. He and Vaa’i have anchored the competition’s best lineout and will be pivotal in the forward battle against the Crusaders.
