The NSW Waratahs have made eight changes to the starting XV for Saturday’s Round 14 Super Rugby Pacific clash against the Fijian Drua at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, as head coach Dan McKellar looks to inject fresh legs for what is effectively an elimination match.
McKellar spoke of his excitement about the trip to Fiji, whilst acknowledging the unique challenge the Drua present on home soil. He stressed the importance of starting well, pointing to the Highlanders defeat as a cautionary tale, and backed his squad depth with a simple philosophy of having a squad-wide readiness to perform.
Four changes come in the forward pack, with Jack Barrett at loosehead prop, Ioane Moananu at hooker replacing the injured Ethan Dobbins, Matt Philip returning to captain the side, and Clem Halaholo at blindside flanker for his first start since Round Eight. Philip’s return means he re-joins Miles Amatosero in the second row, a combination that has started eight of the Waratahs’ eleven matches this season. Angus Scott-Young shifts to number eight, with Charlie Gamble continuing at openside.
In the backline, childhood friends Teddy Wilson and Jack Bowen form the halves partnership, with Bowen set for his first start of the season having played just 44 minutes in 2026. Wilson replaces Jake Gordon at scrum-half. Lawson Creighton and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, who beat six defenders and made 13 carries against the Highlanders, continue in the centres. Wallaby Harry Potter comes in at right wing for his first start since Round Six, Triston Reilly returns on the left wing, and Max Jorgensen retains his place at fullback after producing the most carries and metres of any Waratahs player last weekend.
The bench carries significant storylines. Oniti Finau, a 22-year-old hooker from Randwick in the Shute Shield, is named and will make his Super Rugby Pacific debut should he take the field. McKellar praised his development through the Waratahs’ pathway programmes, describing him as a talented player who has earned his opportunity.
Perhaps the most remarkable story belongs to scrum-half Michael McDonald, who is in line for his first Waratahs appearance since 18 July 2020 against the Brumbies at Stadium Australia — a gap of 2,129 days. The 26-year-old has played for the Western Force, Ulster and Connacht in the interim before re-joining the club. Ben Grant is also set for his first appearance of the season.
The Waratahs have never won in Fiji, losing both previous visits to Lautoka. Saturday’s match is the first Super Rugby Pacific fixture in Suva, and the Waratahs will need to overcome a vocal home crowd and the Drua’s distinctive brand of rugby to keep their season alive.
