Oisín McCormack crowned his first appearance of the season with a dramatic bonus-point try in the 11th minute of stoppage time as Connacht secured a hard-fought 31-15 victory over Zebre in Parma.
What should have been a routine assignment against the URC’s bottom side turned into a nerve-shredding encounter that was not settled until deep into overtime. Stuart Lancaster’s side trailed 3-0 at half-time after a controversial TMO decision denied them a try, and were made to battle until the final whistle against a Zebre outfit depleted by eight players on Six Nations duty with Italy.
The bonus point that seemed inevitable when Connacht led 21-8 with 19 minutes remaining suddenly looked in jeopardy when Bautista Stavile’s try reduced the deficit to 21-15 with six minutes left. Sam Gilbert’s 79th-minute penalty provided breathing room, but it was McCormack’s late score from a driving maul – after Zebre centre Marco Zanon became the third player yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on – that finally secured the maximum five-point haul.
The victory moves Connacht up to 10th in the standings, within touching distance of the top eight, while Zebre remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
Key moments
3′ – ZEBRE THREATEN: The Italians show early attacking intent as fly-half Gonzalo Garcia breaks through a gap in the Connacht defence. But for a Chay Mullins strip, the hosts would have scored an early try. A warning sign for the visitors
8′ – BELLONI BREAK: Wing Mirko Belloni breaches the Connacht defence as Zebre continue to attack from deep. The hosts are causing problems with their willingness to move the ball
15′ – FERRARI THROUGH: Giacomo Ferrari finds a gap in the Connacht defence as the Italian pack begins to assert itself. Lancaster’s side are struggling to find any rhythm
22′ – DISALLOWED TRY CONNACHT: Controversy erupts. Wing Chay Mullins appears to have scored in the corner after good work from the Connacht backs, but TMO Keith David intervenes for a possible knock-on from Josh Ioane in the build-up. A technical issue on the big screen in the stadium means referee Ben Whitehouse cannot verify the call himself. Whitehouse defers to David and rules the try out – but delayed replays suggest the score should have stood. Connacht are furious
25′ – PENALTY ZEBRE: The hosts capitalise immediately on the momentum shift. Martin Roger Farias slots a penalty to put Zebre 3-0 ahead – the only score of a frustrating first half for the visitors (Zebre 3-0 Connacht)
29′ – BLADE BREAK: Scrum-half Caolin Blade makes a dangerous break to get Connacht moving forward, but the visitors cannot convert the position into points
33′ – GESI THREATENS: Zebre wing Simone Gesi breaches the Connacht defence as the Italians continue to look dangerous in attack despite their lowly league position
38′ – AUNGIER DENIED: Connacht come closest to scoring seven minutes from the break when prop Jack Aungier stretches for the line, but lock Matteo Canali makes a crucial intervention to prevent the grounding. It remains 3-0 to the hosts
Half-time: Zebre 3-0 Connacht
41′ – TRY CONNACHT: The visitors make the perfect start to the second half. Just 41 seconds after the restart, centre Cathal Forde charges down a clearance from fly-half Martin Roger Farias. Forde is stopped in the left corner, but scrum-half Caolin Blade is on hand to feed second row Joe Joyce, who crashes over for the game’s first try. Sam Gilbert converts from the left and Connacht finally have the lead (Zebre 3-7 Connacht)
50′ – TRY CONNACHT: Lancaster’s side are now in control. After multiple drives are stopped short of the line, number eight Sean Jansen shows tremendous power to squeeze through and score under the posts. Gilbert adds the conversion and suddenly Connacht have breathing room (Zebre 3-14 Connacht)
55′ – TRY ZEBRE: The Italians respond with a well-worked try. Using their forward power to break through from a penalty scrum, scrum-half Gonzalo Garcia shows excellent composure, dummying the defence before touching down with an outstretched arm. Roger Farias hooks the conversion wide, but Zebre are back in the contest (Zebre 8-14 Connacht)
59′ – YELLOW CARD ZEBRE: Garcia’s evening takes a turn for the worse. The scrum-half is shown a yellow card for a deliberate infringement on the Connacht line as the visitors press for another score. A crucial moment
61′ – TRY CONNACHT: Connacht make the numerical advantage count. From a penalty kicked to touch, the pack does the business once again with Jansen adding his second try from the driving maul. Gilbert converts to extend the lead to 13 points (Zebre 8-21 Connacht)
71′ – YELLOW CARD CONNACHT: Chay Mullins is shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on with eight minutes remaining. Suddenly the hosts have a lifeline
73′ – TRY ZEBRE: Zebre capitalise immediately on their numerical advantage. From the resulting lineout, replacement Bautista Stavile powers over with a strong run to reduce the deficit to just six points. Roger Farias converts and the tension in Parma is palpable (Zebre 15-21 Connacht)
77′ – PENALTY CONNACHT: With the game in the balance, captain Paul Boyle opts to take the points rather than risk a turnover by going to the corner. Gilbert steps up and slots the penalty from the right to put Connacht two scores clear. A wise decision that proves crucial (Zebre 15-24 Connacht)
88′ – YELLOW CARD ZEBRE: The clock is deep in the red as both teams keep the ball alive – Zebre hoping for a losing bonus point, Connacht searching for the maximum haul. Centre Marco Zanon becomes the third player yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on as Connacht press in the corner
91′ – TRY CONNACHT: The bonus point finally arrives in the 11th minute of stoppage time. From the resulting lineout, the Connacht pack sets up a driving maul and replacement Oisín McCormack – making his first appearance of the season – emerges to score and secure the five-point haul. Gilbert maintains his superb form from the tee by landing the conversion from the right wing (Zebre 15-31 Connacht)
Full-time: Zebre 15-31 Connacht
Match report
A week after Connacht and Ireland centre Bundee Aki was banned for four matches for verbal abuse of match officials, Stuart Lancaster’s side found themselves on the wrong end of another controversial refereeing decision that threatened to derail their afternoon in Parma.
Chay Mullins appeared to have scored a perfectly good try in the 22nd minute after good work from the Connacht backs. However, TMO Keith David intervened for a possible knock-on from Josh Ioane in the build-up. When a technical issue on the big screen meant referee Ben Whitehouse could not verify the call himself, he deferred to David and ruled the try out.
The delayed replays told a different story – suggesting the score should have stood. Connacht were furious, and the decision handed the initiative to a Zebre side who had already shown their willingness to attack from deep.
It had not been a memorable opening. Zebre, despite missing eight players on Six Nations duty with Italy, displayed admirable ambition with ball in hand. Garcia broke through a gap inside the opening three minutes, and but for Mullins’ strip, the hosts would have taken an early lead. Belloni and Ferrari both found gaps in the Connacht defence as the Italians continued to cause problems.
Connacht, missing the three players in Andy Farrell’s Ireland squad in addition to the suspended Aki, were guilty of overplaying. Their decision-making in the final third was poor, turning down two kickable penalty attempts in favour of lineouts that yielded nothing.
The disallowed try compounded their frustration. Roger Farias’ subsequent penalty gave Zebre a 3-0 lead that they would take into half-time – a scoreline that failed to reflect an open game but one that left Lancaster with plenty to address at the interval.
Whatever the Connacht head coach said at half-time, it worked. Just 41 seconds after the restart, the visitors were in front. Forde’s charge-down of Roger Farias’ clearance was the catalyst, the centre showing excellent anticipation to block the kick and then chase the loose ball into the left corner. Though Forde was stopped short, Blade was on hand to feed Joyce, and the second row crashed over for the game’s first try. Gilbert’s conversion from the touchline gave Connacht a 7-3 lead.
The Irish province now had control of the contest. Their pack began to assert dominance, and after multiple drives were stopped agonisingly short of the line, Jansen showed the power and determination that has made him such a valuable acquisition. The number eight squeezed through a wall of defenders to score under the posts, with Gilbert adding the extras to make it 14-3.
But Zebre, to their credit, refused to capitulate. Using their forward power from a penalty scrum, they worked the ball through the phases before Garcia showed excellent composure to dummy the defence and touch down with an outstretched arm. Roger Farias hooked the conversion wide, but at 14-8, the Italians were very much still in the contest.
Garcia’s yellow card four minutes later for a deliberate infringement on the Connacht line looked to have killed his team’s hopes. Lancaster’s side duly punished the numerical disadvantage, Jansen adding his second try from another driving maul to extend the lead to 21-8.
With 19 minutes remaining, the bonus point seemed a formality. But Mullins’ yellow card for a deliberate knock-on in the 71st minute changed the complexion of the contest once more. Stavile’s powerful run from the resulting lineout brought Zebre within six points at 21-15, and suddenly Connacht were hanging on.
Boyle’s decision to take the points from a 77th-minute penalty rather than risk going to the corner proved crucial. Gilbert’s successful kick made it 24-15, putting Connacht two scores clear and ensuring the four points were safe even if the bonus point remained elusive.
Both teams kept the ball alive as the clock went deep into the red – Zebre hoping for a losing bonus point, Connacht searching for the maximum haul. When Zanon was yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on as the visitors pressed in the corner, the opportunity finally arrived.
McCormack, the Ballinasloe native making his first appearance of the season off the bench, finished the job in style. The driving maul rumbled towards the Zebre line, and McCormack emerged to touch down in the 91st minute. Gilbert maintained his superb form from the tee – finishing with a 100% record from five attempts – to complete a 31-15 victory that secured Connacht’s third win of the campaign.
The controversial disallowed try will dominate discussion, but Connacht will be relieved to have secured the five points in what proved a far tougher assignment than anticipated.
Sean Jansen’s double underlined his importance to this Connacht side, while Sam Gilbert’s flawless kicking display – five from five including four conversions and a crucial late penalty – ensured the visitors were never out of reach.
Player of the match
Sean Jansen was the standout performer for Connacht, his two tries from close range demonstrating the power and determination that has made him such a valuable addition to Lancaster’s squad. The number eight was relentless in the tight exchanges, repeatedly getting Connacht over the gain line when space was at a premium.
Special mention too for Sam Gilbert, whose 100% record from the tee proved crucial. His four conversions and late penalty ensured Connacht stayed out of reach during Zebre’s spirited fightback, and his composure under pressure was evident throughout.
