Leinster kicked off their United Rugby Championship campaign with a hard-fought 33-31 bonus-point victory over Edinburgh at Hive Stadium on Friday night. In a thrilling encounter that saw ten tries scored, the Irish province’s second-half surge proved decisive, although they had to weather a late storm from the hosts.

Edinburgh, fielding a strong side with 12 internationals, started brightly and took the lead through Pierre Schoeman’s try. The powerful prop barged over from close range following a tap penalty, with debutant Ross Thompson adding the conversion.

Leinster, despite missing several key Ireland players, responded quickly. Tommy O’Brien finished clinically in the left corner after slick hands from the backline, though Sam Prendergast couldn’t add the extras.

The visitors then edged ahead when young centre Charlie Tector, making his first start, showed great awareness to field a weak box kick from Ali Price. The 22-year-old then demonstrated impressive footwork, stepping inside the last defender to score under the posts.

However, Edinburgh’s star winger Duhan van der Merwe levelled the scores before halftime. The try came from some brilliant build-up play, with Thompson and Jamie Ritchie combining well before releasing the Scottish international, who used his pace and power to cross in the left corner.

The Scottish side regained the lead early in the second half when hooker Dave Cherry rumbled over from a well-executed driving maul. But Leinster’s quality began to tell as they scored three tries in a blistering 10-minute spell.

Jordan Larmour struck first, zipping over the whitewash after a clever offload from Prendergast. Then it was Jamison Gibson-Park’s turn, the scrum-half showing his class by fending off both Price and van der Merwe on his way to the line. Captain Jack Conan completed the blitz, powering over from close range after sustained pressure.

Edinburgh refused to lie down, with van der Merwe grabbing his second try to set up a tense finale. The winger showcased his finishing ability once again, outflanking Jamie Osborne on the left wing after precise passing from the Edinburgh backs.

Leinster’s task was made harder when Ross Byrne was controversially sin-binned late on for taking out Darcy Graham in the air. Edinburgh capitalised in the dying seconds, as replacement scrum-half Ben Vellacott made a searing break before offloading to Matt Scott, who crossed under the posts to secure a four-try bonus point for the hosts.

Despite the late scare, Leinster held on for a valuable away win to start their campaign. The result will please head coach Leo Cullen, particularly given the absence of several frontline players and the strength of the Edinburgh lineup. There were promising signs in attack for Sean Everitt’s Edinburgh, but defensive frailties will need to be addressed as they look to improve on last season’s disappointing 10th-place finish.
