Melbourne Rebels 23 Chiefs 26
The Melbourne Rebels pushed the Chiefs all the way but ultimately fell short, losing 26-23 in a thrilling Super Rugby Pacific Round 13 clash at AAMI Park. In what could be the Rebels’ final home game due to financial uncertainty, the hosts fought bravely but were unable to overcome a determined Chiefs outfit.
Coming into the match, the Chiefs had won nine of their previous ten encounters with the Rebels, including a narrow 16-15 victory in their last meeting in Melbourne back in 2015. The visitors were also in red-hot form, having won their previous three matches to climb to fourth on the ladder.
The Rebels, meanwhile, were desperate to give their fans something to cheer about in a must-win clash for their playoff hopes. They made a late change to their starting lineup, with Matt Gibbon and Glen Vaihu replacing Isaac Kailea and Darby Lancaster.
It was the Rebels who started the stronger, with Lachie Anderson making a scintillating break from inside his own half to put the hosts on the front foot. The ball was then spun wide to Vaihu, who stepped inside two defenders to score in the corner and give the Rebels a 5-3 lead after an early Damian McKenzie penalty.
The Chiefs hit back through a try to lock Tupou Vaa’i, who powered over from close range to put the visitors ahead 10-8. However, Vaa’i went from hero to villain shortly after, being yellow-carded for a high shot on Rebels flyhalf Carter Gordon.
Despite being down to 14 men, the Chiefs extended their lead through a McKenzie penalty, taking a 13-11 advantage into halftime.
The visitors came out firing in the second half, with hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho crashing over from a rolling maul to stretch the margin to 20-11. McKenzie added a further penalty to make it 23-11, and the Chiefs looked to be cruising.
But the Rebels refused to lie down, with Anderson sparking the comeback with a try in the 57th minute after a lovely floating pass from Gordon found Jake Strachan, who put his winger into space.
Anderson was in again in the 73rd minute, finishing off another slick backline move to level the scores at 23-all and set up a grandstand finish.
However, the Rebels’ discipline let them down at the crucial moment, conceding a penalty right in front of the posts with just two minutes remaining. McKenzie made no mistake with the kick, putting the Chiefs back in front 26-23.
The Rebels had one final chance to attack from the kick-off, but they couldn’t find a way through the stubborn Chiefs’ defence, with a knock-on sealing their fate.
While the Chiefs got the win, they were made to work for it by a Rebels side fueled by emotion and desperation. The visitors’ attack struggled to find its rhythm for much of the match, with handling errors and poor decision-making blunting their usual potency.
McKenzie was the standout for the Chiefs, kicking 16 points and providing a steady hand in the backline. Up front, captain Luke Jacobson and flanker Kaylum Boshier were tireless in defence and at the breakdown.
For the Rebels, Anderson was a constant threat with ball in hand, while Gordon recovered well from his head knock to direct the attack. Nick Jooste also had a strong game, kicking two penalties and a conversion.
The win keeps the Chiefs in the hunt for a top-two finish, with matches against the second-placed Hurricanes and ladder-leading Blues to come. The Rebels, meanwhile, remain in sixth spot but will need to regroup quickly for a tough trip to face the Brumbies in Canberra next week.
