The Black Ferns have received a major boost ahead of their end-of-year tour with the return of star winger Ayesha Leti-I’iga and co-captain Kennedy Simon.
Leti-I’iga, who hasn’t played for the national team this season due to an ACL injury, was a standout performer in the Black Ferns’ triumphant 2022 Rugby World Cup campaign, scoring two crucial tries in the final against England.
Black Ferns Director of Rugby Allan Bunting expressed his delight at having Leti-I’iga back in the squad, stating, “To have Ayesha returning is special, she has worked hard for this opportunity. She is lethal both sides of the ball, and her experience and character really enhances our environment on and off the field. We look forward to seeing her get back out there.”
The 30-player squad, which also sees the return of props Kate Henwood and Marcelle Parkes from injury, will embark on a challenging tour that includes a standalone test against England at Twickenham on September 15, followed by the WXV 1 tournament in Canada, where they will face Ireland, England, and France.
Bunting acknowledged the competitive nature of the selection process, attributing it to the growth seen within the team. He emphasized the importance of this tour in the build-up to next year’s Rugby World Cup, stating, “This tour presents an awesome opportunity for our wāhine to face the best. The spectacle of playing at Twickenham, and the experience we gain from WXV 1, play an important role in our build-up for next year’s Rugby World Cup.”
With the return of key players and a demanding schedule ahead, the Black Ferns will be looking to make a statement on their end-of-year tour as they continue their preparations for the defence of their World Cup title next year.
